Crossing the eye of the typhoon! Observation of Typhoon "Little Dog" by Black Pearl Cluster

Summary:

In September 2023, four sets of meteorological and hydrological observation type Black Pearl unmanned ships were deployed in the Philippine waters to carry out real-time observation of autumn typhoons. Among them, three sets of Black Pearl unmanned ships successfully captured the changes in meteorological and hydrological elements during the passage of Typhoon "Xiaogou" from September 30 to October 7, 2023, including temperature, pressure, wind speed, wind direction, water temperature, and humidity.

Typhoon "Xiaogou" formed in the northwest Pacific Ocean on the morning of September 30, 2023, and gradually moved towards the northwest and strengthened. It strengthened to a super typhoon level twice on the night of October 2 and October 4, during which a gust of 95.2 meters per second was measured in Orchid Island on the night of October 4, breaking the local record for the strongest gust in 126 years and in China; At 8:20 a.m. on October 5, it landed at Erluanbi, Pingdong County, Taiwan, China Province, China, at the level of strong typhoon (48 m/s). Then it sailed westward into the South China Sea, with a slight reduction in physical size but no significant decrease in intensity. On October 6th, it strengthened again to a strong typhoon level in the South China Sea.
China is in a leading position internationally in predicting the formation of typhoons, changes in wind force levels, and movement trajectories. The use of the "Black Pearl" cluster can provide early warning of the arrival of typhoons, greatly reducing personnel and property losses. To understand the impact of typhoons, the "Black Pearl" can observe the sky and sea for a long time, move forward by waves, and search for patterns in the ocean, which can greatly improve the efficiency and safety of ocean data monitoring.
The Black Pearl unmanned ship is equipped with meteorological stations, temperature and salinity sensors, etc., to record the entire process of physical parameters such as atmosphere and water, in order to understand the changes in key marine atmospheric elements during the formation, development, and disappearance of typhoons, explain the changes in the size, path, and intensity of typhoons, and better predict and forecast the changes in typhoons and the sea air environment, serving the production and life of residents at sea and along the coast.
